Just picked up a bronze BWM to a member of the Macedonian Mule Corps! Couldn't resist it... It is to 4225 Kleanthis, Pavlou, Muleteer Macedonian Mule Corps, for those interested.

Many thanks! Certainly an oddity for me as I seem to spend a fortune 'rescuing' regular BWM on sale over here, but this one was priced so low I wondered what it was, and lo and behold...!!! I gather they are pretty rare? Or at least uncommon?

Trajan,

I don’t know about rare but certainly uncommon. As I said, a great find!

All the best,

Kleanthis Pavlou served in Salonika between 31st August, 1916 to 29th September, 1917. The Macedonian Mule Corps mainly recruited in Cyprus, although initially it recruited in Greece.

There are eight registers, held at the National Archives under WO405 which list all members of the Corps, giving the period of their service and home addresses. Unfortunately, WO405 is not on line but the Medal Roll for the Corps (which also gives the period of service) can be accessed on Ancestry.

Hope this helps.

NB I believe Ancestry is free of charge from tomorrow, for a week, to mark the anniversary of the Victory in Europe 1945.

Andrekos Varnava has also written a book on the subject. I'm just about to start reading it.

Many, many thanks!

According to https://www.europeana.eu/en/item/2020601/https___1914_1918_europeana_eu_contributions_5741 there were 11,193 members, but I think I read (quickly!) somewhere that some men rejoined the unit after an initial short period of service. That would agree with the 31st August 1916-29th September 1917 dates for my man that Sepoy gives. And we all look forward to Keith's reading of the book!

I freely admit I knew nothing of the unit except its existence, but there does seem to be a fair bit written about it.

Hi I recently bought a Victory medal for a Driver Nadar 7th Mule Corps Cyprus.number 1522. I looked on Ancestry but numbers appear to jump from 707 to 1682. Can anyone throw some light on this .Thanks in advance.

Hi Seivy
Does the naming on the Victory Medal actually say "Cyprus"?
Please add a couple of photographs of the naming on the rim or just post the exact naming as it appears on the medal.
I suspect that you have an Indian Army Mule Corps medal.

Will get a photo later on. No the medal is mounted on Cardboard with details below medal ,it states Cyprus on the card, but not on medal. the exact wording is 1522 Dvr Nadar, 7, M C

Not the Macedonian Mule Corps - there never was (to the best of my knowledge) a 7th MMC, while the service number 1522 for the MCC is for Georghios Nicolaou, a muleteer.

M.C. is the correct abbreviation on a medal for 'Mule Corps' - and the name 'Nadar' is Asian, to my eyes, so probably 7th Indian Mule Corps

I did wonder about the name, but after reading some records there did appear to be some Muleteers with  Asian names, but looks like you are correct. Thanks Trajan.
