Expat yeoman Posted 1 May , 2020 Share Posted 1 May , 2020 Hi all, looking for some guidance please. I have been researching a number of Essex Imperial Yeomanry officers who were later recalled and served in the Great War. In most cases I have successfully found their entitlements from either or both of their medal cards & the regimental medal list but there are six people that have eluded me... I'd love to confirm what if any 1914-18 medals the following names did receive: John Dumville Botterell. Recalled from the reserve and then served with the West Kent (Queen's Own) Yeomanry.but his medal card is blank. Horace Walter Calverley. Recalled from the reserve in 1915, served as a District Remount Officer as a temp major. Archibald (Archie) Gilbey Gold. Recalled September 1914 and the Army lists have him as a Major in Nov 1914 then he disappears from the Essex Yeo on the Army List, he is not on the regimental medal record and I can't find a personal medal card. Henry James Lermitte. Recalled from the reserve as temp Major (hon Lt Col) in November 1914 Frank Cecil Meyer. Recalled in October 1914 and in May 1915 appointed Signals Officer with 8th Cavalry Bde, but i can't find his MIC (Which list would he be on as a HQ staff?) Herbert Leslie Melville Tritton. Recalled as a temp Major in Jan 1915 with 2/1st EY. Can't find his cards but perhaps as he served in home role with 2nd line did not qualify for medals? I am assuming they could have received BWM, Victory Medal at least with service, but perhaps not if home based which may explain the blank MICs I'd seen? I'm pretty new to this stuff so probably (hopefully!) am missing something obvious and apologies if so. I've been able to solve the medals awarded puzzle for my 38 other names of interest (and Lermitte's pre-war medal entitlement) but these six have me stumped for the 1914-18 period. Hopefully above info is sufficient but I do have more details for all if that would help, let me know what is needed. Would be grateful for any guidance and pointers to solve..! Many thanks Michael
chaz Posted 1 May , 2020 Share Posted 1 May , 2020 (edited) no 5 , no medals shown apart from hand written 15 star and BWM at top https://www.ancestry.co.uk/interactive/1262/30850_A001078-00004?pid=3608197&backurl=https://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?indiv%3D1%26dbid%3D1262%26h%3D3608197%26tid%3D%26pid%3D%26usePUB%3Dtrue%26_phsrc%3DfXQ4540%26_phstart%3DsuccessSource&treeid=&personid=&hintid=&usePUB=true&_phsrc=fXQ4540&_phstart=successSource&usePUBJs=true&_ga=2.54458218.331244195.1588258397-837196019.1555861983 no 4, name spelt different ? https://www.ancestry.co.uk/interactive/1262/30850_A000961-01003?pid=3628033&backurl=https://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?indiv%3D1%26dbid%3D1262%26h%3D3628033%26tid%3D%26pid%3D%26usePUB%3Dtrue%26_phsrc%3DfXQ4543%26_phstart%3DsuccessSource&treeid=&personid=&hintid=&usePUB=true&_phsrc=fXQ4543&_phstart=successSource&usePUBJs=true I think a subscription to fold3 would pay, there are a few records from the officers rolls there Edited 1 May , 2020 by chaz
Expat yeoman Posted 1 May , 2020 Author Share Posted 1 May , 2020 Chaz, thank you that is brilliant. Meyer, that's my man and so confirms BWM & VM. Pretty sure Lirmitte is the same person - hon Lt Col who died in 1918 and it was his widow who applied in 1923. Two down :-) I had not seen fold3 before, I shall take a look. Need to see what it covers against Ancestry and Findmypast as I am already subscribing to those services! Appreciate your time and comments, thank you. chaz Posted 1 May , 2020 Share Posted 1 May , 2020 Michael, Fold3 is part of Ancestry but you still have to pay for it. no 6 Tritton, still looking but have you seen his jubilee and coronation roll. https://www.ancestry.co.uk/interactive/1686/31794_221448-00509?pid=411777&backurl=https://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?indiv%3D1%26dbid%3D1686%26h%3D411777%26tid%3D%26pid%3D%26usePUB%3Dtrue%26_phsrc%3DfXQ4549%26_phstart%3DsuccessSource&treeid=&personid=&hintid=&usePUB=true&_phsrc=fXQ4549&_phstart=successSource&usePUBJs=true mic https://www.ancestry.co.uk/interactive/1262/30850_A001574-03011?pid=4769718&backurl=https://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?indiv%3D1%26dbid%3D1262%26h%3D4769718%26tid%3D%26pid%3D%26usePUB%3Dtrue%26_phsrc%3DfXQ4552%26_phstart%3DsuccessSource&treeid=&personid=&hintid=&usePUB=true&_phsrc=fXQ4552&_phstart=successSource&usePUBJs=true
Expat yeoman Posted 2 May , 2020 Author Share Posted 2 May , 2020 Amazing, thank you. I got those for the 1897 Diamond Jubilee receipients but I had not seen these - have added. is there a similar folio for the 1911 coronation? The regiment was represented there too (Capt Eustace Hill) so I assume those on parade should have received. If there is, I cannot find it on Ancestry (and I note the medal allocation process was different so perhaps no central register..) The MIC is definitely our man (he worked for Barclays so Lombard St address makes sense), odd that it is blank. Ancestry is great, once you get your head around all the nuances! Expat yeoman Posted 2 May , 2020 Author Share Posted 2 May , 2020 And sorry folks, one more that I omitted from my first list.. Charles Harry Wylde. Served with the Essex IY 1902 - 06. Recalled and served as a temp Captain with 18th (Service) Bn Mancester Regt. I have his SA entitlements (QSa, two clasps, KSA two clasps) but he's another with a blank MIC for Great War. Expat yeoman Posted 3 May , 2020 Author Share Posted 3 May , 2020 Thanks chaz I'll take a look. From my records he resigned his commission with the Essex in 1906 so interesting if he is still on the rolls somewhere else in 1912.
chaz Posted 3 May , 2020 Share Posted 3 May , 2020 wondering then if Charles H Wylde is 80841 RAMC. a slightly safer regiment for an older man only entitled to a pair https://www.ancestry.co.uk/interactive/1262/30850_A001736-02234?pid=477352&backurl=https://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?indiv%3D1%26dbid%3D1262%26h%3D477352%26tid%3D%26pid%3D%26usePUB%3Dtrue%26_phsrc%3DfXQ4620%26_phstart%3DsuccessSource&treeid=&personid=&hintid=&usePUB=true&_phsrc=fXQ4620&_phstart=successSource&usePUBJs=true there is also another Charles Henry Wylde 19th London 625095 and Middlesex regt G/106134 only entitled to a pair https://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?indiv=1&dbid=1262&h=477351&tid=&pid=&usePUB=true&_phsrc=fXQ4626&_phstart=successSource these might or might not be him , something to go on, missed the first part of the war so no star entitlement

I think the other two are different men, first it would be unusual I think for a Lt to then serve as a private, also his civilian career was as a museum curator so no particular tie there to RAMC skills. I shall keep looking..
Expat yeoman Posted 7 May , 2020 Author Share Posted 7 May , 2020 I found these today, there can't be too many Captain Charles Harry Wyldes with an 1864 birthdate so if it is him then there's a big gap between his time in Manchester and moving there. Still nothing on the medal front but hopefully with this I can make some progress..
David_Underdown Posted 7 May , 2020 Share Posted 7 May , 2020 Officers had to claim their medals. If they didn't there may not be a MIC as I understand it.

Interesting thanks David, makes sense for the MICs. I would have thought there would be some list of entitlements though, presumably that's the medal rolls themselves. To that end I tried the manual way and went through the full lists for the Manchester Regt, West Kent Yeo and Remount Service to see if I could find Botterell, Calverley, Lermitte and Wylde - a nil return for all. So there's either missing data somewhere, or they only had home service (I was told that did not qualify for e.g. BWM, VM). For now they'll stay on my unsolved list and I'll focus on Archie Gold! As I'm overseas I'll try and place a request for a copy of the records failing which on my 'to do' for next trip to Blighty. And some interesting new info for Guy Gold, thanks. I'm onto that now. Thanks for the tips! Edited 9 May , 2020 by Expat yeoman
eyman Posted 19 December , 2020 Share Posted 19 December , 2020 (edited) Michael Apologies for the delay Botterrell Capt, W Kent Yeo; no medals shown on MIC but the rear of the card shows he applied in 1922. A Kent yeomanry specialist told me he was in Egypt 1916 and was a Staff Capt, Palestine before 1 April 1917 so must have earned at least BWM/VM. Can't trace him in the rolls. Calverley Not traced Gold No medals but earned a knighthood (LG 3.6.18), which specifically mentions his role in raising 2/1st EY Lermitte No WW1 medals. His IGS 1854 is where it should be (). Should be entitled to memorial plaque as he died in 1918 and is recorded by CWGC (but does not appear in "Officers Died") Meyer 1914-15 Star trio; he'd gone overseas as c/o of the 1st draft to 1/1 EY in Jan 1915; also served with RE Signal Service and RAF; wounded 21.3.18; MID LG 11.12.17 (Myer) (his son, Sir Antony, earned fame as the MP who challenged Mrs Thatcher for the leadership 30 years ago) Tritton No medals other than his unique silver 1902 Coronation. Served with 2/1st EY. Demobilised ill health 17 Oct 1918. Despite that, not in silver war badge roll. Wylde Did you know he was the Keeper of Ceramic Section, V & A Museum 1893-1921? Apart from service in the ranks and subsequently as Lieut in the Imperial Yeomanry in S Africa, which earned him his only medals, he was Lieut Essex IY 1902 to 1906 and then commissioned in the Manchester Regt in 1915, being shown in the Army Lists for March 1920 as T Capt (Interpreter). From the V&A I found out he was Capt, HQ 6th Corps, Army of the Rhine, Cologne in Feb 1920. So while he made it overseas, this must have been after the war ended Hope this helps Ian Edited 19 December , 2020 by eyman Update
Expat yeoman Posted 19 December , 2020 Author Share Posted 19 December , 2020 Hi Ian, this is tremendous and thank you very much for this. These ones have been very tricky to nail down. Lermitte - I'm sure you'll know the anecdote about him losing equipment in South Africa? Meyer I have as serving in the Home Guard in WW2 so I think we can add a Defence Medal for him too. I had picked up on Wylde at the V&A but otherwise very little about him has surfaced. There is a death notice in the exact same name (and it's not a common name) in Kenya, 1953 which I think is him. I haven't been able to identify what took him out there though. Interesting to read about the SWB and Memorial Plaques too - if only we could confirm that they were issued.. Thanks again, that has helped enormously. Michael
