Japanese rifles = Arisaka rifles. There are a couple of threads about them in Briitsh service - hold on I'll have a look and see if I can find them. Britain bought quite a quantity of both rifles and carbines. I have some pictures (and hopefully a new one arriving soon purchased on eBay this week)

Links to come if I can find them

Sorry I realized too late you were concerned about transcription rather than the rifles!

I read it as:

These three battalion were unarmed having  handed in their  Japanese rifles on being formed into Composite Batt and their CO & officers,

but the last part

???  ??? ???????  and ???????, their D????? Rifles

might it possibly say

Capts, Lieuts and  ???2Lieutenants??  their  ????  Rifles

The penultimate word is capitalised (D) so I assume a proper noun or name can't think what it might be!

"the Service Rifle"   ??

By George! I believe he's got it!

Well done.

What is the date of this extract?

I would guess 1915/16? in which case the "Service Rifle" might refer to older MLE or CLLEs (the old standard Service Rifle) as opposed to ShtLE (the new standard service rifle)
