Armourer Gauges

Most of my gauges are stamped SMxxx.  Does anyone know what SM stands for?  Is there a document that lists all the gauges that have SM numbers?

Piper42nd,

My guess would be something along the lines of,

SM = specification measurement or standard measurement.

The experts on here will know.

Regards,

JMB

There have been several threads on armourer's gauges and tools on the Lee-Enfield forum at milsurps.com. Some retired British and Australian armourers post there regularly.

I have most of the Armours Gauging Standard Manuals and it lists the SM No for each task: VICKERS MMG eg SM441 PROFILE SIDE LEVERS, SM426 FIRING PIN PROTRUSION, SM7a SEAR.  Let me know the SM numbers and will look them up to many to list.

The two I can find at the moment are:  SM391, inspectors plug gauge and SM185 which I would guess has something to do with .455 pistol barrels.  So what does SM stand for?  Thanks.

Pre NATO Part number Stores Vocab Code. The Vocabulary system was used by the British Army for close to ninety years until it started to be displaced by NATO Stock Number (NSN) system in 1956.  As can be seen all items in the picture TT then number.
