Remembered Today:

Scandlon brothers of Barry Dock

While looking through some pension records this morning I came across the case of three brothers from South Wales, none of whom appear to be commemorated by the CWGC!

Thomas Patrick Scandlon (born 1891), John Scandlon (born 1892), and William Francis Scandlon (born 1896) were all born in Penarth or Barry in Glamorganshire, though their parents both came from Youghal in Ireland. The 1911 Census shows the family living at 86 Castleland Street in Barry Dock:

John Scandlon also served in the Royal Naval Reserve, number EA 1887.

John was issued the Silver War Badge on 14 November 1917. After discharge, he married Roasline Mayled at Cardiff in 1918 and had two children. He also died from tuberculosis on 3 July 1921, though the pension records don't say if this was attributable or aggravated by service.

Thomas and John are both commemorated at Barry Memorial Hall.

All three brothers are commemorated on the St Helen's Parishioners memorial.

William doesn't seem to meet the CWGC criteria for Merchant Navy casualties, and John will need more evidence (I haven't looked at his service record), but there does at least appear to be a case for Thomas Patrick Scandlon.
