PaulC78 Posted 19 April , 2020 Share Posted 19 April , 2020 (edited) While looking through some pension records this morning I came across the case of three brothers from South Wales, none of whom appear to be commemorated by the CWGC! Thomas Patrick Scandlon (born 1891), John Scandlon (born 1892), and William Francis Scandlon (born 1896) were all born in Penarth or Barry in Glamorganshire, though their parents both came from Youghal in Ireland. The 1911 Census shows the family living at 86 Castleland Street in Barry Dock: William Francis Scandlon served in the Merchant Navy. Medal card: https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D8090098 SS Cardiff Hall: https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C14694524 SS Penhale: https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C14732358 He last served on SS King David and died from gastritis at St Vincent on 30 March 1916, having been hospitalised five days earlier. Thomas Patrick Scandlon served in the Royal Naval Reserve, number EA 1815. He also turns up in the crew of two merchant vessels. Service record: https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D8533810 SS Cherbury: https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C14733790 SS Camden: https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C14738606 He died on 26 Decemeber 1916 from tuberculosis attributable to service. John Scandlon also served in the Royal Naval Reserve, number EA 1887. Service record: https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D8533882 John was issued the Silver War Badge on 14 November 1917. After discharge, he married Roasline Mayled at Cardiff in 1918 and had two children. He also died from tuberculosis on 3 July 1921, though the pension records don't say if this was attributable or aggravated by service. Thomas and John are both commemorated at Barry Memorial Hall.
