Simon R Posted 18 April , 2020 Share Posted 18 April , 2020 (edited) The disused rifle range on Hawksworth Moor in West Yorkshire is well known to many walkers, bird watchers, prehistorians and geologist The military history is less well defined, and this short article seeks to develop a chronology and context for the site. Hawksworth began in the volunteer movement of the 1860's and was still in use in 1914 when private money raising 12th KOYLI also expanded the range to its present format. Forum members may find it interesting and can read the article on the Otley Local History Bulletin. ilkley remembers Posted 19 April , 2020 Share Posted 19 April , 2020 Interesting article and website. Ilkley Moor was used extensively in the years before 1914 by University OTC and Volunteer units for training , although, they usually had the good sense to camp in the valley bottom by the Wharfe on East and West Holmes Fields.
