Hi All,

Not too sure as to what all units mean and why he was given the rank of 2nd Lt upon demob? These records are both of the same man.

Many thanks for any help in advance

Dan

Apparently he enlisted and then was later commissioned (hence attendance at Cadet Wing for officer training).

I am also looking at an RAF Service Record, and would like any advice on what the codings mean in the Movements section.

Departing Authority:  RDO/165.

Unit from which:  RD

Arrival Authority Confirming:  I.WS/221.

Are the numbers references to Squadrons?

CDD = Cadet Distribution Depot, Hampstead, London

RD = RAF Depot, Blandford

1OTTW = No 1 Officers’ Technical Training Wing, St Leonards on Sea – in July 1918 had been reformed at No 8 Cadet Wing, Shorncliffe

3 Sqdn 1 OCW = No 3 Squadron a unit within 1 (Officers’) Cadet Wing, St Leaonards on Sea

Seems to be some confusion, though, as to when he was posted to 1 CW

8 SofA = No 8 School of Aeronautics, Cheltenham (moved to Shorncliffe, 14 Nov 18)

He was granted an honorary commission along with many other Cadets who were unable to complete their aircrew training because of the Armistice. You can look this up in the London Gazette online (note page number and date of this on the record)

Cheers,

Errol

Hi Errol,  This information looks very interesting, and I am relating it to the information for my two ancestors. Some codings are the same, but do you know what '2 Sofa' referred to?

The first 2 docs I have uploaded relate to Sol, an Officer Cadet.  The 3rd pink doc relates to Harry who was a Private 2, if you have any knowledge of his codings?!

Any help is much appreciated.

2 SofA = No 2 School of Aeronautics, based at Oxford in the various university colleges there.

WS Win = I’m fairly sure, Wireless School. This was based at South Farnborough when formed 8 Nov 17 but on 19 Oct 18 the Mechanics Section moved to Winchester (I realise the date does not quite match with your record but otherwise it seems to fit). On 13 Nov 18 the HQ moved from South Farnborough to Flowerdown and on 8 Mar 19 the Wireless School itself was redesignated No 1 (Training) Wireless School Squadron.

DC Clipstone = Dispersal Centre, Clipstone (where he would have been demobbed)

(source: RAF Training and Support Units since 1912)

Cheers,

Errol
