chasray Posted 4 April , 2020 Share Posted 4 April , 2020 (edited) Good afternoon, I am trying to find out where the above mentioned soldier (my great uncle) died in WW1.. He was with the 376th battery of the 198th Brigade of the RFA... He died on the 23rd of March 1918... His name was George Clayden. His service number was 234467 and he was a driver... Any information about exactly where he died and in what action would be appriciated... Regards, John Edited 4 April , 2020 by chasray
3fowler Posted 4 April , 2020 Share Posted 4 April , 2020 Good Afternoon John Are you sure you have your unit titles correct? I don't believe there ever was a 198 Bde RFA and the only 376 battery I am aware of is 376 Siege Battery RGA. James
mancpal Posted 4 April , 2020 Share Posted 4 April , 2020 John , what exactly do you know so far in order to save others trawling through archives only to find you already have that information. The date indicates the German Spring Offensive (Kaisers Last Stand so to speak) He didn't serve abroad before 1/1/16. He is remembered on the Pozieres Memorial indicating his remains were, 1) buried and lost in subsequent bombardment. 2) Body recovered but beyond ID, 3) body never found. He has an MIC and CWGC listing. Whatever else you know would be worth posting as sometimes it turns up an answer from a less than obvious source. Good luck with your research Simon

3fowler Posted 4 April , 2020 Share Posted 4 April , 2020 John I think there has been an error in transposing the details and I think you will find that your Clayden belonged to 376 Bty of 169 Bde RFA James
