RaySearching Posted 4 April , 2020 Share Posted 4 April , 2020 HOYLE EDGAR Lance Serjeant EDGAR HOYLE 1190 Honourable Artillery Company Edgar was killed in action by a snipers bullet (a gunshot wound to the chest) on April 4th 1915 aged 31 during the 2nd Battle of Ypres, his last words as he lay dying were “God help Vi and Joyce” He was the son of John and Louisa B Hoyle of Gravesend Kent and the husband of Violet Maud Hoyle (nee Bean) (born Middlesbrough) of 27 Camden Street Middlesbrough The couple married in Gravesend in 1909 Edgar can be found on the 1911 census residing with his wife and mother in law Annie Bean at 27 Camden Street Middlesbrough his occupation is given as a civil and electrical engineer His brother Wilfred also enlisted, he died whilst being treated for trench foot in Netley Hospital Hants of pneumonia on March 15th 1915 a third brother Pte 2332 Leonard Arthur Hoyle, Honourable Artillery Company also served he survived Wilfred’s grave can be found in Gravesend cemetery in Kent Edgar’s widow Violet died in 1954 her headstone which can be found in St Cuthberts cemetery Marton includes a commemorative memorial inscription for Edgar The register of soldiers effects list his widow Violet M as the legatees of his effects The register of Probate and Wills reads (Hoyle Edgar of Park place Milton Kent private H.A.C died 4th April 1915 at Elynwalle France Administration (with Will) London 8th October to Violet Maud Hoyle widow Effects £559.5s) A photo and obituary can be found in the roll of honour of the institution of electrical engineers page 166/172 The claimant of a dependant’s pension is listed as Violet Maud Hoyle (widow) born 23/7/1882 of 27 Camden Street Middlesbrough later of 54 Easterside Road Middlesbrough with an allowance for one child Joyce Doreen born 20/7/1914 Born Greenhithe Kent enlisted Armoury House (N.E.D.G 9th April 1915) VOORMEZEELE ENCLOSURE No.3 Linthorpe Cemetery St Cuthberts Cemetery Ormesby Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
