Here is a postcard that I have.

It only shows the 'MT' title.

I don't know if this was always the case.

Someone else can perhaps show if it was sometimes different?

I have 50+ MT ASC cards, most show just  ASC, a couple have just MT as in DBYS's example.  I have a few that show the two tier title.

Is the variance due to soldiers having to buy there own badges?

Officially these were, I believe, provided, but I read a gripe from an ASC man that he had to buy his own shoulder titles. Perhaps he dressed up his ASC titles by adding the MT’s. I have two or three photos showing the chap in #3; only one picture shows the two tier titles.

ASC attached to Motor Machine Gun Service and MGC(M) batteries were Mechanical Transport - both drivers and artificers. Sometimes also seen cap badged MMG.
