O PIP

I keep coming across various references to the name O PIP . I believe these refer to observation post but could anyone explain why the name O PIP is used. Was this term unique to the Salonika campaign.

I am going through the editions of The Mosquito on DVD and have reached No 67, September 1944 and on page 74, Buck (The writer) says " I well remember joining my unit in the BSF, 67th Bty, 20th Brigade, RFA, 27th Division 1917. When I was warned to go to an observation post. The next day I felt that active service had really begun. Picture my surprise when after a short walk, I was taken to a small dugout where there was just room for a telephonist. My view consisted of the side of the trench by which I had entered . The O PIP was about 20ft above my head. he then says that close by was a Naval O PIP. He then goes on about serving in other O PIPS around Salonika including the Struma Valley . I have seen references to the name O PIP early editions of The Mosquito including a Poem. Hope This helps.

It is an early phonetic alphabet thing used by signallers in particular.  "Pip" = The letter P.  "Pip emma" meant P.M, and so forth.  O- pip just stands for O.P.
