Remembered Today:

Vickers machine gun ammunition boxes

Those of you with an interest in the Vickers machine gun may like to see the video I recorded yesterday on the variations of boxes and why some of the variations exist. There are around 20 that I discuss with many Great War examples.

We also did a video on how some of the boxes were carried in the Great War and Second World War. This included some wider uses of 1914 pattern equipment.

Great to see the Gloves Machine Gunner and Facemask MG in one of your associated videos. I am on the hunt for both so seeing them almost in the flesh was very useful. Thanks.

Hi Mark,

Pleased you like the videos. The late Joe Sweeney told me the gloves were the only pair he knew that survived and the mask possibly one of only two examples. He wrote an article for Militaria Magazine some years ago that used these ones as illustrations.

I'm currently reproducing the gloves and mask for my own purposes but may consider some additional ones if people are interested.

Hi Richard,

Was it your items Joe used in that article as I have that edition of MM? Thanks for the info on  the copy gloves and mask but as a bit of an original kit obsessive I will try and locate some originals. I am sure like you looking for Vickers stuff I find the hunt is half the fun. Once you have a reference point you are armed with a bit more knowledge to spot those illusive bits.

Kind regards

Yes, that's right Mark. These are those items (the mask might be the other survivor). No worries, I understand about originality. I've got some more information, and different photos, on the webpage here: https://vickersmg.blog/in-use/accessories/personal-equipment-of-machine-gunners/uniforms/ As I'm working through the Army Orders, Army Council Instructions and other info, I'm adding what I find on the different items of equipment.
