mancpal Posted 1 April , 2020 Share Posted 1 April , 2020 (edited) Herbert was 22yrs old at the time of his death. His rank was Rifleman and his all important service number was R/18286. He is buried at Heilly Station Cemetery, Mericourt- L'Abbe, plot No E26. Heilly station was a Casualty Clearing Station at the time of his death so it is likely he died there of wounds received elsewhere, by downloading the Bttn war diary from the NA you should be able to determine the likely skirmish in which he was injured though he's unlikely to be named. The diary should also show you where the battalion served from arriving in a theatre of war until his death, the disclaimer being if this particular diary still exists, someone on here will know. His medal entitlement was the BWM and VM which means although he may have been in the army prior to 1/1/16 he did not serve in a theatre of war prior to this date. His family resided at 35 Mortimer Rd, Downham Rd, London. CWGC has knowledge of his brother, Walter Charles Nelson having fallen but no mention of a third sibling. Walter (No M/922) was a sailor with the rank of Leading Cooks Mate aboard HMS Cressy which was one of 3 ships sunk in the same incident at the eastern end of the English Channel by torpedoes (22/9/14) fired by German submarine U9 captained by Otto Weddigen. He is commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial. Hope this helps, Simon Edited 1 April , 2020 by mancpal
