Invicta Moto Posted 31 March , 2020 Share Posted 31 March , 2020 Charles was my grandfather's uncle. He was killed near Armentieres and is buried in a small cemetery called Desplanques Farm. The date on the gravestone is 13/9/15. Looking for any information we can about the battalion and Charles' contribution. He had a daughter that emigrated to Canada in the 20's. Although we were in contact with her she knew very little of her father's service.
alf mcm Posted 31 March , 2020 Share Posted 31 March , 2020 Charles landed in France on 24th May 1915. This is shown on his medal record card https://www.ancestry.co.uk/interactive/1262/30850_A000440-02795?pid=4901858&backurl=https://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?_phsrc%3DbmY38388%26_phstart%3DsuccessSource%26usePUBJs%3Dtrue%26indiv%3D1%26dbid%3D1262%26gsfn%3Dcharles%26gsln%3Ddevall%26gsfn_x%3D1%26gsln_x%3D1%26cp%3D11%26qh%3Ddd9205d0a6e5e79848869dd0bb7a8385%26new%3D1%26rank%3D1%26uidh%3D9y4%26redir%3Dfalse%26gss%3Dangs-d%26pcat%3D39%26fh%3D1%26h%3D4901858%26recoff%3D%26ml_rpos%3D2%26queryId%3D36229cfcb09f4f2d3b35ea0ee4cb08fd&treeid=&personid=&hintid=&queryId=36229cfcb09f4f2d3b35ea0ee4cb08fd&usePUB=true&_phsrc=bmY38388&_phstart=successSource&usePUBJs=true The 2nd Royal Irish Rifles had landed in France in December 1914, so Charles was part of a group re-inforcing the Battalion. The War Diary for 2 R.I.R. is available from The National Archives for a small fee https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C7353484 This should show when Charles group actually joined the Battalion in France {perhaps a couple of days after landing} and will show where they were and what they did until Charles death in September 1915. He is unlikely to be mentioned by name, but this is probably the best way to find out what he went through. Regards, Alf McM
