Researching William Edward George Lovesey #1874 and #947688 RFA Territorial Force , dob 27/8/1894 dod 21/8/1960 , 14/15 Star , BWM , VM . His service records are on Ancestry but I am struggling to trace his movements . On his records is mentioned 7th Battery 2/3 London Bgde  and 56th Divisional Ammunition Column and Indian Base Depot  . I cannot identify these units on LLT and am unfamiliar with the organisation of the RFA . I would like to know whereabouts in France/Flanders he served and what battles he might have been involved in .Any help would be much appreciated

Hi Clive,

William went to France with 1/3rd London Brigade RFA TF attached to 36th Division, but later joined a reformed 56th Division. This brigade, consisting of 1/7th, 1/8th and 1/9th County of London batteries and an Ammunition Column, all from the Finsbury area, was re-designated 282nd in May 1916. At almost the same time the Brigade Ammunition Columns were abolished and became part of the Divisional Ammunition Column. This is indicated by his posting to 56th DAC on May 16, 1916. It appears he was in No. 4 section and later the Small Arms Ammunition Section (S.A.A.Sec.). He was only at the Indian Base Depot (Marseilles) for a few months in 1919 before his demobilization.

The War diaries you need to consult are:

WO 95/2941/1 - 282 Brigade Royal Field Artillery (1915 Oct. - 1916 Dec.) then
WO 95/2941/4 - Divisional Ammunition Column (1916 Feb. - 1919 May)

Excellent and extremely helpful. Reading your response it's clear that tracing Artillery units is much less straight forward than infantry battalions. The Finsbury connection is logical he lived in Tottenham. Many thanks.

282 Brigade was only part of the 56th div from 6 May 1916 - 20 Jan 1917 when it became an Army Brigade
