Guest Posted 30 March , 2020 Share Posted 30 March , 2020 Can anyone confirm please if Q15985 would be the service number of this solider pictured in the postcard? I can’t seem to find any service records using this service number, the person in the photo is a relative of my grandmother whose maiden name was also Perry. Keith_history_buff Posted 30 March , 2020 Share Posted 30 March , 2020 Hello, This man has a service record. You can download a copy for £3.50 from The National Archives.https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D7792294 Alternatively, if you are a FindMyPast subscriber, you can download his one page service record. requests for lookups are against the rules of the forum, though. Some of the five digit numbers had a "2" prefix applied to the records. This subject came up recently. Hope this is of interest.
horatio2 Posted 30 March , 2020 Share Posted 30 March , 2020 (edited) The 'Q' denotes his Company Letter at HQ RMA. When the RMA and RMLI were amalgamated into RM in 1923, those men who remained in Portsmouth Division RM had a '2"' added to their RMA register number.
