hello

thumbing through some old dealers list I found a ww1 pair with foreign decorations to a F A WELLESLEY who apparently served in the French Regiment

Looking on line it seems the every battalion had a British Major - why was that ? He was apparently in his seventies during ww1

cheers

Ian

Seems unlikely or we have heard of it somewhere else ..... might this bloke be The Hon Frederick A. Wellesley of the British Army/French Red Cross? (Photo: IWM Lives)

unless of course this says French Red Cross (according to a later auction) and not French Regiment

Apparently taken in 1895 at Merton Hall, Wimbledon which fits nicely with his apparent age you mentioned earlier.

....... for completeness what Foreign Decorations were shown on the dealers list as awarded to him?   Thanks.  Ian.

thats another odd one

the dealers list in the 90s says Romanian Order of the Star and Russian Order of St Anne. Fast forward a few years and the Russian medal is now missing from the next list

but thats  a question for another time

It seems a strange Foreign Decoration combo for service in the French Red Cross doesn't it.  Presumably the Russian award ceased from 1917. Potentially multi-grade awards with no obvious trace in EG/LG during the Great War .......... where's Foreign Gong when you need him!

Could this bloke be the famous soldier/diplomat/"spy" the Hon. Frederick Arthur Wellesley (1844-1931) and pre-war author of "Russians in Peace and War - Recollections of a Military Attache"?  If so, these might be pre war medals from earlier service abroad.

It would be interesting to find out more about his Red Cross role in the Great War. Seems like a good self isolation project.
