CCD12 Posted 27 March , 2020 Share Posted 27 March , 2020 Can anyone help me identify this ribbon? This is a picture of Peggy Hull, the first woman journalist to be credentialed by the AEF. She is wearing a campaign ribbon. To my knowledge there was not a practice of correspondents wearing such ribbons. I suspect this was just her personal affectation. But, I'm curious as to what it is. I have tried to blow up the ribbon she’s wearing, but it gets pretty grainy. The photo is dated September 25, 1918. She would have been in Washington at this point and just received her credentials. She had already reported from France in 1917. But she was about to embark for Vladivostok, from where she would report for six months.
Acknown Posted 28 March , 2020 Share Posted 28 March , 2020 In this photo she's wearing three medals: https://www.kshs.org/kansapedia/peggy-hull-deuell/15137. In her biography, available here: https://archive.org/details/warsofpeggyhull00smit she seems to be wearing them in 1917, but I cannot find any mention of medals therein. CCD12 Posted 28 March , 2020 Author Share Posted 28 March , 2020 Thanks Acknown. Three ribbons, my goodness. I don't know what the policy was for credentialed correspondents and ribbons. They did wear the uniform of an officer, without any designation of rank, so perhaps they were authorized to wear ribbons. Hull was not credentialed in 1917, though that did not stop her from wearing a military-style uniform.
Acknown Posted 28 March , 2020 Share Posted 28 March , 2020 Indeed, a brief scan of the biography indicates that she designed her own uniform, which did not meet universal approval. A most interesting person. Now we need a US medal expert to tell us what they are. Acknown
CCD12 Posted 28 March , 2020 Author Share Posted 28 March , 2020 She does get a mention in my forthcoming book (July 1), An Unladylike Profession: American Women War Correspondents in World War I.

The Inspector Posted 28 March , 2020 Share Posted 28 March , 2020 Hi CCD12 There doesn't seem to be a mention of her marriage and hence the name change. CCD12 Posted 28 March , 2020 Author Share Posted 28 March , 2020 Ok, The Inspector, that's a clue. Though, the Navy Commendation ribbon doesn't look like the one she's wearing here.

CCD12 Posted 28 March , 2020 Author Share Posted 28 March , 2020 Thank you again. I did not have that. She didn't take a good picture that day. It does mention her connection to staff officers. In 1916, she had covered the U.S. incursion into Mexico for the El Paso newspaper and got to know Pershing and other senior officers, connections that served her well when she got to France in 1917 and for getting permission to go to Russia in 1918. CCD12 Posted 30 March , 2020 Author Share Posted 30 March , 2020 Problem solved. It is a ribbon for the Mexico Service, Punitive Expedition, 1916. Hull worked for an El Paso newspaper in 1916 and covered that campaign. She must have been using an old photo in 1918.
