Commonwealth Virtual Memorials

I was asked the question about the UK having a similar memorial to the CVWM here in Canada. The Canadian system is only for those that were killed in the conflicts.

 

If I am correct, these are the Virtual War Memorials that exist to date - please correct me if I am wrong and please add any others: (in alphabetic order)

 

• Australia: Virtual War Memorial Australia
  • it states that it covers all those that served from the Boer War to current
  • there is special attention to those that were killed in the conflicts, whereas Canada is only those that died
  • you can register for an account and then submit new information
     
• Canada: The Canadian Virtual War Memorial
  • anyone can submit images, with associated text, about anyone on the memorial
  • you are required to submit your information and the submissions are reviewed prior to posting
  • the database is based on the names in the CWGC database
  • it includes Canadians that were serving in British units
  • some of the provinces also have their own virtual war memorials
    
• New Zealand: New Zealand Online Cenotaph
  • it encourages you to submit your own information
  • the intent is that it will include all those that served (see the criteria page)
  • it would appear you did not have to die to be added to this site
     
• South Africa: need information
  • there is a separate "South Africa War Graves Project"
     
• United Kingdom: Imperial War Museum - Lives of the First World War
  • the site says this digital project ran from 12 May 2014 to 19 March 2019
  • it appears to be based on input received, so if you did not input a person then there is no entry
  • it does not have all the names of the people in the CWGC database
  • it appears there is work (discussed here on the GWF) to make it permanent and improve the system
