Remembered Today:

Sapper Royal Engineers

Trying to trace the movements of Sapper Herbert Hooley 45672. I believe he enlisted in 1914 and went to France in 1915.  Family oral history has it that he was buried alive somewhere around Cambrai but was rescued.

I believe he probably enlisted in his home town of Northwich Cheshire.

Any ideas on how to find what sort of unit he would have been placed in?

Any suggestions gratefully received.

According to Williamson The Great War Medal Collectors Companion service no`s to RE 45000-45999 issued to :- RE Field Coys 63 (9th Div). 80 (18th Div). 84 (20th Div). 95 (7th Div) and 18th Div Signalling Coy.  If the anecdote is correct the 20th Div were at Cambrai 20th - 28th November 1917

45625, 45626 and 45636 belonged to 22 Div Sig Coy. 45638 belonged to 96 Field Company. Enlistment dates were September 1914.

At the end of the War Diary for the Commander Royal Engineers 20 Div is a list of wounded, in date order, of 84 Field Company. For 1916 there are nine names with numbers 45xxx. There are also some 44xxx numbers. All the wounded named on 03/09/1916 and 04/09/1916 are named in the Times OCL 11/10/1916. My RE grandfather is also named in the RE wounded in the Times list 11/10. There are other 45xxx numbers in the OCL, some with service or pension records that put them to 96 FC (20 Div).
