Remembered Today:

West Country War Memorials - Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, and Somerset

I have just come back from the West Country area and of course took the opportunity to call into the odd church, grave yard or see a local town memorial.

I though that it might be a nice idea to collate some of these into an image bank for members to take as they wish as they might be looking for a particular name or person.

Please add your own images if you can.

To start things off, here is St Peter & St Paul’s Church - Shepton Mallet - Somerset.

Good stuff KB, the Taunton memorial is quite singular, or have I not been paying attention? It has a feel of the mediaeval somehow.

Hi Pete you are correct, the memorial is based on the 'Eleanor' crosses erected by King Edward I in memory of his wife, Eleanor of Castile, to mark the nightly resting places along the route taken when her body was transported to London in 1290. The original twelve crosses were lavishly decorated stone monuments of which three survive intact at Waltham Cross, Geddington and Hardingstone.

It did cross my mind (no pun intended) to mention the Eleanor crosses but I couldn't remember her name or the Castile bit. Interesting.

This is an opportunity to share the magnificent Memorial window in St Aubyn’s Church, Devonport. Unveiled in 1926, “in memory of all our fellow countrymen who served in the Great War”.
