michaeldr Posted 18 March , 2020 Share Posted 18 March , 2020 From the Mitchell Report of 1919 (p.64) “Summary of Action of 18th March—Results of Attack. Up to 1345, when the French squadron was ordered to return and the minesweepers to advance, everything had proceeded according to plan. The gunfire from the Narrows forts was at this time slight and apparently dominated by the Fleet. There appeared to be no reason, had there been no minefield, why the Fleet should not have steamed through, keeping the forts under fire, with little loss. A few minutes later, 13.55, 'Bouvet' sank.................” The rest, as they say, is history And today Turkey marks the 105th anniversary of the Ottoman victory, albeit in a somewhat subdued fashion as a result of the pandemic. https://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/photo-canakkale-is-impassable-153071#photo-1 https://www.dailysabah.com/turkey/turkey-marks-105th-anniversary-of-canakkale-victory/news

Eceabat Posted 19 March , 2020 Share Posted 19 March , 2020 Wreaths were laid at the Turkish memorial at Morto Bay by the provincial governor of Canakkale, Orhan Tavlı; the head of the Gallipoli Historical Area directorate, İsmail Kaşdemir; the commander of 2nd Army Corps, General Zekai Aksakallı; and Admiral Levent Kerim Uça, commander of the Dardanelles Defence Zone. https://catab.ktb.gov.tr/TR-259666/canakkale-sehitler-abidesinde--mahzun-toren.html

Eceabat Posted 20 March , 2020 Share Posted 20 March , 2020 "I was informed by some Turkish mates that rememberance of Ataturk and the war and later War of Independence, has been reduced due to the present PM over the last few years?" Quite the contrary Steve. Over the past decade or so, commemoration of the Çanakkale Savasi, as the Gallipoli Campaign is known in Turkey, has become a significant activity. Before the coronavirus outbreak caused a cancellation of March 18 events, Turkey's president was due to spend the day in the province, attending ceremonies in the city of Çanakkale and on the peninsula. While many of these ceremonies in recent years have been closed to the public, large numbers of Turkish officials, along with members of the foreign diplomatic corps, attend, with all the events broadcast on state media. There are other Gallipoli-linked events commemorated by the Turks through the year, including a re-enactment of the march of Mustafa Kemal and the 57th Regiment from the village of Bigali to the Anzac battlefield on April 25 (cancelled this year due to the virus); a commemoration of the fallen in the disastrous May 19 attack at Anzac; ceremonies to mark the battle of Chunuk Bair on August 10; with a more recent event instituted to commemorate the final Allied evacuation of the peninsula on January 9. It is true that the role of Mustafa Kemal is given less prominence than in the past; though still acknowledged there is also greater reference to other Turkish leaders in the campaign (sadly the role of Turkey's German allies, including that of the commander of the Ottoman land forces Otto Liman von Sanders, is still ignored). Guest Posted 20 March , 2020 Share Posted 20 March , 2020 (edited) Bill, I mention this as what I found? Quote" "They are taking every possible step to move Mustafa Kemal aut off the minds of turkish nation. But some 60 million well educated turks still hang on him under all possible pressure. the is a great risk of life in turkey. no one dare to speak. They cleaned the army and reorganizing their own. They cleaned the justice and organizing thir own judges. the press is under their control. only a few papers can right againts them. journalist of opponent are followed by the police. Honoustly to say if they work so hard to make Turkey the Star of islam. I say I am one of them. But their aim is not making turkey a rich social cultur islam state but turn turkey worse then Afganistan. On May for the occasion of landing of Mustafa Kemal pasha at shore on Samsun I published an article.viewtopic.php?f=80&t=241439&p=2205793#p2205793The turkish central bank press a serie of memorial money without Atatürk.The recent election for the mayor of Istanbul gave us a new hope some 16 millon voter for canditate of CHP the Peoples Party of Atatürk. This made them fear and cancelled the elections without any reason. The new election will be on 23rd of July. The news show that it will be a diasaster for them. But I am afraid they will take every step to pospone the elections. Allah can not help us Only our will to live happlily in a modern and rich Turkey can save us. There is a bad and unlucky future for us." Of cause this is just one mans view. Baggar, I just thought this maybe out of the rules to talk about, if so please delete if so, sorry Cheers S.B Edited 20 March , 2020 by stevebecker
Eceabat Posted 2 April , 2020 Share Posted 2 April , 2020 Just a notification from the front. Turkish officials announced on April 2 that all Turkish commemorative activities on the Gallipoli Peninsula for April 24 and 25 have been cancelled due to the coronavirus outbreak. Australia and New Zealand announced last month that commemorative activities, including the Dawn Service, on the peninsula would not be conducted this year. Guest Posted 2 April , 2020 Share Posted 2 April , 2020 Mate, Yes even the RSL has cancelled all Anzac Day activities here also. So no marches or services or gatherings at the RSL and Memorials this year. Sign of the times. Stay safe Cheers S.B
