PaulC78 Posted 15 March , 2020 Share Posted 15 March , 2020 https://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/138013/cowley,-/ Quick question: The above casualty Sapper J Cowley is listed on CWGC with the number 8135; should he in fact be commemorated as 426362 instead? Dai Bach y Sowldiwr Posted 15 March , 2020 Share Posted 15 March , 2020 It looks like he was part of the Royal Engineers (TF) renumbering of 1917. As he died on January 4th,before the renumbering I'm guessing he was still serving as 8135. He was subsequently renumbered after his death. This was not uncommon. https://www.longlongtrail.co.uk/soldiers/a-soldiers-life-1914-1918/renumbering-of-the-territorial-force-in-1917/renumbering-of-the-territorial-force-royal-engineers-in-1917/
