A friend of the wife made a run for it from Spain before they closed the border (long queues of motor homes from every European country all with the same idea) and arrived at Eurotunnel tonight, pre-booked so no problem and currently on M20.

Apparently hundreds queueing in France to get home, if you don't have a booking it's a twenty four hour wait.  Anecdotal and unverified but it all sounds pretty chaotic.

Belgium is going on lockdown from tomorrow Noon until the 5th April.

One cannot be outside, driving, biking or walking, unless it's for:

  • necessary shopping
  • Doctor
  • Pharmacy
  • work (if teleworking is not possible)
  • helping an elderly relative

You're allowed to go out for a walk or a run but alone or if accompanied only with somebody living under your roof.

Stay Safe!!

I was manning HorsePower Museum (the King's Royal Hussars museum in Winchester) today. We closed early and are now closed for the foreseeable. I believe the other museum on site (Gurkhas, Rifles and AGC) likewise. I assume the Royal Hampshires, also in Winchester, will be the same.

From what I have seen, this applies to pretty well every regimental museum in the UK.

English Heritage are closing all their volunteer staffed sites from tomorrow until the 1st May

Dover Castle and Tynemouth Castle are two sites with Great War interest, there are probably others.

At Bateman's (National Trust) Kipling's home the grounds are open provided social distancing is observed.  The house and associated buildings are closed.

Had an email re a classic car auction scheduled for IWM at Duxford tomorrow advising museum was closed and auction bidding would be online only.

I'm guessing it will soon be universal and all museums both in the UK  and  Europe will be closed for the forseeable.

National Trust has closed its houses and coffee shops but has announced that it is waiving the non-members charge for its gardens should people want to be out and about in them.

Owing to people being idiots about social distance this has now been revoked and all sites are closed.

I assume that the Monday morning draw for seats at the National Archives will now be cancelled, and that they will be closed from Wednesday for at least a month.

I think we must follow Mr. Asquith's policy-"Wait and See".   I am not sure what is going on with BL- every slot is coming up as "Sold Out"-I suspect it might be fence-sitting on that one.

Tomorrow morning's  Google searches should prove very interesting when limited to "Past Hour"

I think you're right, Keith, as it's going to be difficult to "justify" going to Kew unless you can demonstrate you are making a living out of research. My research at Kew has ended up behind a FMP paywall (different subject and a different time period), but I am not a professional genealogist or similar.

I do hope they restart the slot releases in two weeks time, presuming the lockdown period does not get extended. For the next two weeks, getting a slot has now changed from nigh impossible to being impossible.

I see from the above that botanical gardens are to close, so RHS Kew will be affected, too.

With a view to keeping within the canon of the original classification of this post, trips from the UK to France, Flanders or elsewhere are now curtailed for the next four weeks, as being deemed as non-essential travel.
