Remembered Today:

2nd Lieutenant William Campbell, MC

wpf1958

Recommended Posts

9th Battalion Royal Scots, he died on Tuesday 31 July 17 and is buried in Essex Farm.

Would anyone have the citation for William Campbell's Military Cross, or the date of citation. He was awarded it for action at Roeux on 23rd April 1917.

Any help would be gratefully received.

No citation, but Neil Gilhooley's excellent recent History of the battalion (Pen & Sword, 2019) mentions the action: '... he picked up a Lewis Gun and, although wounded, inspired his company by advancing on Roeux firing on the enemy. He remained in command of his platoon for the rest of the day ...'

He was then killed by shell fire at the canal bank, north of Ypres, on 10th July.

Neil is a member of the Forum so a PM to him might spark a response.

2nd Lt. William Campbell. E. Scots. For conspicuous gallantry and skill in an attack. He led his platoon with great bravery, picking up a Lewis gun and inflicting heavy casualties with it on the enemy, and, although wounded, he remained in command until relieved the following day.

20th July 1917

There is a small amount of biographical information in Neil's book, too. Campbell was a Private in the battalion at the start of the war, an actuary and a Watsonian.
