Brilliant, great photo's - and all credit to you and none to me on that post :-)

 

Surprising given how many other garrison units there were between Burma, (and the Andaman Islands) and the Bay of Bengal & Mesopotamia that men of the 18th Battalion were sent on such jaunts. Presumably either British Army efficiency at it's usual best or something to break the relative monotony of the garrison posting. Can't see anything to show he went to Basra beyond the piece in the National Roll - no obvious 2nd MiC. Of course some of this may depend on when the piece was written - prior to the actual issue of medals he may have thought he was entitled to the 1914/15 Star based on when he sailed for India, (rather than when he arrived), and the Victory Medal because other members of the unit who did the Basra eecort duty were in line to get it.

 

The truth is we shall probably never know,

Hi Peter,

I placed a thread on the forum years ago concerning the 18th with quite a few pictures. Not really in my sphere of interest as they were usually older soldiers that were grouped together with the director of Personnel Services placing them under the wing of the Rifle Brigade, rather than the KRRC or the Guards, the only Regiments at that time without Territorial affiliations. They were managed by the London Territorial Association hence had very few ties to the Rifle Brigade with very little known about them in the RB, separate pay office etc etc but were given permission to wear the Rifle Brigade badge in December 1915.

Can you give me the reference number of the pic; I have no record of a H T Davis serving in the LRB although I do have notes concerning 30 odd soldiers with this surname.
