Why would a penny from 1948 weigh 2.7 g and have so many different metals in it?  Titanium?

For others of us wondering what a "shellcase penny" is: from 1944 to 1946, salvaged ammunition shells made their way into the minting process of US 1c coins, and it was not uncommon to see coins featuring streaks of brass or having a considerably darker finish than other issues.

However, I suspect that this thread will soon be closed by a moderator as this Forum is confined to the Great War of 1914-18.
