HAIDAR PASHA CEMETERY

I have now visited Turkey several times, however this May I hope to make my very first visit to this cemetery.

Others GWF members may be in a similar position and have not yet got around to Haidar Pasha.

If that is the case, and someone has an urgent need for a photograph of a particular headstone or memorial here, then I will do my best to help.

Please let me have exact details of what you require.

Regretably, I can offer no firm guarantee of fulfilment, but I will do my best.

Michaeldr,

if you have the good fortune to get there, might I please have a reasonable file size image of the Haidar Pasha Memorial itself?

Many thanks,

Clive Hughes

I shall certainly do my best for you Clive

Just to be absolutely clear; it's the Haidar Pasha Memorial (in the same cemetery there is also the Haidar Pasha Cremation Memorial) that you require a photograph of?

regards

Michael

Yes Michael, a general shot of the HP Memorial itself if possible.

Note that cemetery is in a militarily sensitive zone where photography is forbidden. A few years ago I was stopped from taking photographs there.

Thanks Hedley.

We are aware of that problem and it is hoped that our contacts there will be able to safely navigate us through; we have been advised to bring our passports along as well

Overnight I have had the opportunity to double check the subject of photography at this site with our contact in Istanbul and I have been assured that usually he does not have any problems here. He will also be accompanying us on these visits.

The sensitive area is No.1 Army Command and that building is certainly out of bounds, however the CWGC cemetery (and the Nightingale museum) should be OK.

So I shall continue taking requests and work on the presumption that everything will be plain sailing in this instance too.

Michael - although it's a long time ago now (!) - we had no problems when there in 2012 (also with a local guide)

I have photos of all the headstones of Aussie soldiers buried there, if anyone is interested...

Cheers, Frev

Do keep in mind that at the rear or east of the cemetery area is a military hospital, which also should not be photographed.

That said, I have never encountered any difficulties in taking photos of individual military or civilian graves or the memorials in the cemetery.

Technically, the adjacent Haidar Pasa railway station is also considered a strategic facility and in theory should not be photographed (and yes I was stopped from photographing rolling stock there, though that was some 30 years ago).

Cheers

Bill

There is a previous topic about Brevet Colonel Geoffrey Davis Pike MC, British Military Agent in the Caucasus, killed by Bolsheviks in Vladikavkaz, now in Northern Ossetia, on 15th August 1918, and is remembered on the Haidar Pasha Memorial
