Remembered Today:

Mystery MEF tankard

Recommended Posts

Hi, I’m new to this site but trying to identify the tankard I found in my late Mother’s house. I think it would have belonged to my maternal grandfather or great grandfather.  It looks like it’s made of pewter and is 12.5cm tall. It has an inscription which looks like

Sgt Bertram

27 C. H.

M. E. F.

It also has an inscription on the base.

Any information on this object would be much appreciated! Thank you.

Hi

Can you post your grand/great g.father's details (both mat. and pat).

It may be from the 27th General Hospital,  MEF, Tel El Kebir, Egypt. If we can trace Sgt. Bertram's service history then maybe there is your answer.

Hi Barry, thanks so much for coming back to me.
My maternal grandfather was called William Bertram, born 25 March 1922 died 1984.

His father was also called William Bertram, born 1879 death unknown.

Many thanks

Hi Duncan

Looks like it belonged to your g/father b.25.3.1922, the three stripes on the photo on your tree would appear to confirm this....off topic for WW1, Regards Barry

Hi Barry, thank you very much. I suspect you are right, although my great grandfather and several uncles (same name) also served, and hence I wasn’t sure how to identify its origin.
