deutscherinfanteriest Posted 27 February , 2020 Share Posted 27 February , 2020 A German observer was killed on 20th May 1916 in the sky of Curlu on the Somme? Are there lists of casualties, to identify him? Are there British documents on this Observer shooting down?
josquin Posted 28 February , 2020 Share Posted 28 February , 2020 On 20 May 1916, a LVG C of FFA 23 fell and burst into flames behind the British lines at Maricourt, which is 3.7 km from Curlu. The pilot was Lt.d.R. Bernward Gross (born 8 February 1887, Hildesheim) and the observer was Lt Karl Musset (born 14 April 1892, Muenchen-Gladbach, formerly an officer of IR 87). The LVG was shot down by 2nd Lt. David Wilson, 24 Squadron, Royal Flying Corps, who was awarded the Military Cross on 24 June 1916 and was killed at the age of 23 on 30 July 1916, a day after his promotion to Temporary/Captain. This may be the aircrew of your inquiry. The website "Frontflieger im Weltkrieg" lists German casualties; "100 Years Ago Today," on TheAerodrome website, lists information about Royal Flying Corps victories and losses for each day of the war.
