Whereabouts of the Surrey Yeomanry August 1915

Hello good people of the forum.

Could somebody please tell me the whereabouts of the Surrey Yeomanry, A Squadron I think, around the 18th to the 31st August 1915?

Were they Manning trenches or anywhere near the forward positions?

Your time and help, as always, are greatly appreciated.

According to the war diary (27th Division A Squadron Surrey Yeomanry) here (if you have access to Ancestry), they were at Croix de Bac.

Here's a trench map from Sept 1917. Move the blue button for present day satellite image.

Brilliant Mike,

Thank you.

Were they in the trenches or to the rear, does it say please?

Thank you for your help so far.

I only get access to Ancestry via the library.

1-24 Aug - Working on "subsiduary lines" - supplied parties for digging and putting up barbed wire entanglements... Parties of Westmorland and Cumberland Yeomanry attached for instruction. Helped farmers with harvest...! Been at Croix de Bac since end of May. There's not much detail...

Mike,

Your help with this one has been great.

Most appreciated!

Can I be cheeky and ask if you can dig out the same information for B Sqn 1/1 Surrey Yeomanry (28th Div) please, if that's ok?

Thank you.

Chris

Hi Chris,

Are you aware of 'The History and War Records of the Surrey Yeomanry 1797 - 1928' E.D. Harrison-Ainsworth. it has several chapters on their time in France and Flanders.

Hello,

Thank you for that, I'll make my friend aware of the book.

I'm just trying to get something sorted for a friend this weekend, otherwise I'd have access to the war diaries on Ancestry, that's why I've been bugging Mike if he, or someone else could look up B Sqn for August.

Your help is appreciated and I'm sure he'll look up that publication.

Cheers

Sorry I can't locate it on Ancestry but it can be downloaded for a small fee here at the National Archives
