On the 23rd May, 1916, H.M.S. Stephen Furness, Armed Boarding Cruiser left Dundee for Kola via Stornaway, reaching Kola on the 3rd of June, 1916. From then until the 13th of December, 1917, when she was torpedoed in the Irish sea, the vessel seems to have been patrolling the Norwegian/Barent seas about Murmansk. I have the ships log and it's very useful but it doesn't give the bigger picture why she was there in the first place, or which Squadron etc she belonged to. Other ships mentioned are H.M.S. Carron and Grive.

Can anyone point me in the direction of threads, books, or any other sources of information.

The Pink List for 30 June 1917 identifies STEPHEN FURNESS as part of the White Sea Force based at Yukanski with INTREPID, IPHIGENIA, CARRON and GRIVE. As an armed boarding steamer she was employed boarding and searching ships in the White Sea. If you can get hold of "Under the Black Ensign" by Captain TS Gwatkin-Williams CMG RN there is much about STEPHEN FURNESS and the other ships. He calls the ships "The British Arctic Squadron".

It's a good book, really useful and builds a very good picture of life at Yukanskie and on patrol at this time.
