Bbeattie Posted 17 February , 2020 Share Posted 17 February , 2020 I recently picked up this felt "R P" marked armband as I recognized the "RP" as Regimental Police but found that yellow backing to be quite strange. At first I thought it may have been a yellow sanitary armband converted but came across a thread here on Regiment Police suggesting some backing colours were the same as the unit's facings. Sharing with a couple collectors they had suggested it to be too crudely constructed to have been made by regimental tailors but in the picture provided the highlanders appear to have similarly crude examples. I was wondering if anyone has seen or has an example of a First War Regimental Police armband I could compare mine to by chance?
FROGSMILE Posted 17 February , 2020 Share Posted 17 February , 2020 (edited) The most likely I think is the Middlesex Regiment, who were proud of their yellow facing colour and used it along with a cherry red on many of their ‘appointments’. These included such things as the regimental tie, headdress and arm flashes, arm bands, company flags and unit sign boards. It was such a strong tradition that it was carried over to 4th Bn Queen’s Regiment when it was formed in 1970. Bear in mind that yellow appeared much darker in WW1 era orthochromatic film. There are examples of RP armbands in this thread: https://www.greatwarforum.org/topic/175861-regimental-police/ Edited 17 February , 2020 by FROGSMILE
