Resurgam13 Posted 14 February , 2020 Share Posted 14 February , 2020 I've long been intrigued by the differences in the bindings of books all purporting to be the First Edition/First Impression. It seems that, in general, if the title is blocked in gilt on the spine it is the "first issue", but if blocked in black it is the "second issue binding" - but is there any hard-and-fast rule to this? Below are two copies of the "Elkin Mathews & Marrot" 1930 English First Edition of Petain's "Verdun" but in substantially different bindings. Can they both be First Edition/First Impression? And, an extreme example, three copies of Goodsall's "Palestine Memories 1917 - 1918 - 1925". This is the "Subscription Edition Limited to 300 copies" yet each of the three is different.
