ejwalshe Posted 9 February , 2020 Share Posted 9 February , 2020 (edited) Operation Alberich (the German withdrawal to the Hindenburg Line,) began on 9 February 1917. Railways and roads were dug up, orchards were felled, water wells polluted, towns and villages were destroyed and a large number of land mines and other booby traps were planted. On 4 March 1917, General Louis Franchet d'Espèrey, commander of Groupe d'armées du Nord urged an attack while the Germans were preparing to retreat. The withdrawal took place from 16–20 March, with a retirement of about 25 miles on the Western Front. Edited 9 February , 2020 by ejwalshe

Hedley Malloch Posted 18 February , 2020 Share Posted 18 February , 2020 "On 4 March 1917, General Louis Franchet d'Espèrey, commander of Groupe d'armées du Nord urged an attack while the Germans were preparing to retreat." To Tommy, he was known simply as 'Desperate Franky'. The withdrawal also flushed out many British soldiers who had been in hiding since the retreat to the Marne in 1914.
