Alan24 Posted 6 February , 2020 Share Posted 6 February , 2020 Recieved this from a tour company today about our trip this Easter. Presumably the memorial will be covered in sheeted scaffolding. We have been advised by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission that a major restoration project will be starting in March 2020 at the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing, France, and continuing through to 2021. We will still be visiting Thiepval Memorial during your tour but various parts of the structure will be inaccessible. Visitors wishing to see relatives’ names, will be able view the relevant panels via a new digital exhibition and also learn about the memorial, its place in the landscape, and the Battle of Somme. The exhibition will also feature some of the casualties commemorated, the wider work of the CWGC and regular updates on the renovation as it happens. Personal stories, archive materials, extensive casualty records and much more will be freely available to all visitors via their mobile devices. We do apologise for any disappointment this may cause, but this essential work will ensure this historic memorial will be preserved for generations to come.
