would soldiers have always fought?. my grandfather was 45 when he joined, I have been told that battalions have about 600 men in them, in battle would all of these men been committed to fight or would some have been kept back for reasons of age or lack of fitness?, I just wonder if  some of the soldiers both old and quite young would have been kept aside to do other jobs?.. There is so very much to learn about this vast !!  subject.

Thank you.

There were a million and one jobs to be done. Some men in a battalion had jobs that could keep them away from the trenches, some did not - it all depends on the situation and job role.

Generally, there were company and battalion clerks, cooks and batmen. There were signallers, drivers for the transport sections, runners, to deliver messages and stretcher bearers.
