GJW Posted 5 February , 2020 Share Posted 5 February , 2020 Hi, Can anyone fill me in on where Ancestry and FMP get the papers for ordinary ranks? I am sure they are not all digitised and I would love to spend a day or two where they are locared? Gerard
Chris_Baker Posted 5 February , 2020 Share Posted 5 February , 2020 I am afraid that will not be possible, Gerard. The originals are in the care of the National Archives but stored in a former salt mine in Cheshire. They are not accessible to the public. GJW Posted 5 February , 2020 Author Share Posted 5 February , 2020 Bummer Chris. doing research on Rep. of Irieland soldiers is difficult work at the best of times. Kew is good for Officers but limited because of it. Is there anywhere else beside Ancestry and FMP I should be looking, do you know of? Keith_history_buff Posted 5 February , 2020 Share Posted 5 February , 2020 (edited) The data on post 1920 service records for men born before 1901 is accessible via Ancestry.https://search.ancestry.co.uk/search/db.aspx?dbid=61448 Alternatively, you can download all the files for free. They were provided in response to a question from forum member Justinth. Here is a link to where the files can be found. https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/foi-responses-released-by-mod-week-commencing-1-december-2014?fref=gc&dti=302369916601668 Edited 5 February , 2020 by Keith_history_buff Posted a link to Justin's blog in error
Keith_history_buff Posted 5 February , 2020 Share Posted 5 February , 2020 When the renumbering took place in 1920, new Enlistment Registers were created. Many of these now sit with the archives of regimental museums. If I recall, those for the Royal Artillery and the Royal Tank Regiment are available via FindMyPast. Here's a thread on the subject. https://www.greatwarforum.org/topic/214248-attestation-books-where-they-were-sent-by-the-modnat-archives Coincidentally, I see you are interested in Irish soldiers. The description books for those Irish regiments, where the recruiting district was now in the Republic of Ireland, have been digitised by the National Army Museum, so this may be of use to you. Their service records should still be with the MODhttps://www.nam.ac.uk/soldiers-records/persons
GJW Posted 8 February , 2020 Author Share Posted 8 February , 2020 Thank you kind people - I have enough here to keep me perplexed for ages. I appreciate the time given to respond to this. Gerard
