Tests of 'Mother' or 'Big Willie' at Burton Park, Lincoln, 14 January 1916. Group includes Major Hetherington, Major Wilson and Sir W. Tritton. The first official photograph taken of a Tank going into action, at the Battle of Flers-Courcelette, 15 September 1916. "C" Company Mark I tank, C.19 'Clan Leslie', in the Chimpanzee Valley on 15 September 1916, the day tanks first went into action. Waves of infantry going forward and passing one of four Mark I tanks detailed to work with the 4th Army which became ditched soon after zero at midday, near Ginchy, 25th September 1916. Mark I Tank of "C" Company, ditched north of Bouleaux Wood on the day Tanks first went into action (captured by 56th Division, 15th September 1916] Note shell-hole by the side of it. On left of sky line is Lesboeufs, and on the right Morval. A French Schneider CA1 tank crossing a trench during training exercises. Note the camouflage the tank is covered with.
