Valerie donovan Posted 28 January , 2020 Share Posted 28 January , 2020 Good afternoon, I apologise if this question is not really for the great war forum, I have recently discovered that my father-in-law August Kirste was born in 1856 in Bremen Germany , I have him living in England London in 1911 but I can find no trace of him being interned In WW1 his age would have been 56/57. surely even at that age he would’ve been considered an enemy. I know in the Second World War his sons fought on the English side and at that stage had change their name from Kirste to Curtis If this question is allowed and shown on this forum is it possible somebody could point me in the right direction to try and find him. Thank you very much
Admin DavidOwen Posted 28 January , 2020 Admin Share Posted 28 January , 2020 It is indeed a question that can be asked here and hopefully someone may be able to assist. I have edited your post title slightly to hopefully attract more attention. Good luck with your research David.
Admin DavidOwen Posted 28 January , 2020 Admin Share Posted 28 January , 2020 It appears that the records of British born wives and children of interned aliens are held at the London Metropolitan Archives in the City of London. I haven't been able to find a return for either West Ham or Newham (the Borough) listed but there is at least one return from Woolwich which may or may not be of any use link ? Sadly not yet digitised. A search of the forum for Interned Germans may have some pointers for you.
Valerie donovan Posted 28 January , 2020 Author Share Posted 28 January , 2020 Thank you so much, It’s not yet digitalised does it mean that I can’t view them Woolwich is only a hop skip and a jump from West Ham I believe i will look into Interned Germans Thank you David
Admin DavidOwen Posted 28 January , 2020 Admin Share Posted 28 January , 2020 You should be able to go to the archives and view it there. See the archive contact details This is the return for a search for "interned aliens" for 1900-1924 at the National Archives. It might have a more relevant document in there? link
