RE: the attached SWB entry for  Pte. Richard Dunne

The second and third columns under 'CAUSE OF DISCHARGE'  have 2(b) and 23-1 entered. Could someone tell me what these mean, please?

Verdun,

I can help on the first and third of the three columns.  They are:

  • sub-paragraph numbers (sometimes referred to as "Articles") of paragraph 392 of the King's Regulations, where Article xvi refers to a soldier being "No longer physically fit for war service" and W or S means due to Wounds or Sickness.  A full list of all the various Articles may be found at http://www.military-researcher.co.uk/KingsRegs1912/Para392Introduction.html.
  • The soldier's age in years and months when he was discharged.

The middle one, I'm afraid I don't know.  The manuscript heading appears to refer to an Army Order but I can't quite make it out, I'm afraid.

David.

23-1 is the age on discharge 23 yrs, 1 month.

He was discharged under 2b of xvi of para 392 kings regs (no longer physically fit) . If I remember correctly the original xvi was tweaked to split in to sub categories, 2b would be a man sent home for discharge from abroad.
