AIF and NZEF deaths on hospital ships

Many thanks seaJane and Alan for these additions - it all helps in the long run...

Mike and Bryn - I've decided to bite the bullet and put all my (and yours) Gascon & Sicilia casualties (for starters) into a database so I can also check them more carefully...will share anymore discrepancies if I come up with them....

Cheers all, Frev

Agree with Frev: thanks Alan and Seajane. All adds to the collective knowledge.

Frev, that would be great.

I've been working my way through a couple of other avenues and have not turned up any more for Sicilia or Gascon, but a couple of deaths at sea on other ships during 1915 in the Med.

Regards

Mike

Another point is the situation of 1719 Burke, Charles, 15 Inf Bn, (NAA3168808) who died of Enteric aboard Gascon on 2 August 1915. His file states he was admitted Gascon on 30/7/1915, and buried at sea near Alexandria on 2 August. The war diary of 15 Bn is not very good at locations, but the unit appears to have been in reserve at Anzac on 30/7/1915 (Walkers Gully), so Burke had to have been transferred to the hospital ship off Anzac, not Cape Helles, on 30/7/1915. This is at odds with Gascon's location at that time according to Frev's work. Or did Gascon make a voyage from Helles to Anzac to Alex, then back to Anzac, between 14 July and 8 August that we are not otherwise aware of?

Mike – had another look at Charles Burke and have included him on the Gascon after all (see below).

July 30th Mudros – Left Cape Helles anchorage for Mudros Bay at 6 a.m.  Arriving at Mudros at 9.30 a.m.  After reporting to D.D.M.S. L of C received orders to proceed to Alexandria after receiving 177 cases from the shore hospitals.

BURKE, Charles, Pte 1719, 15th Bn – DOI 2/8/1915 (Enteric Fever, sick to hosp Gallipolli 27/7/1915, adm to HS Gascon from 15thCCS, Mudros 30/7/1915 – Buried at sea near Alexandria by Chap W.C. Mayne)

My thoughts on the following soldiers:

Bryn’s 1st list “Died aboard Gascon (alphabetical)”

237 Trooper Arthur Leonard BIRCHETT, 3rd Light Horse Regiment AIF. Died of wounds at sea aboard Gascon, 28/05/1915, aged 20.

It seems this soldier died on board the HS Newmarket.

A Field Service form (p.7, 16/6/15) does show the Gascon, but an Amended Field Service form (p.38 original & p.14 copy, 27/6/15) shows he died on HS Newmarket.  All other forms etc show the Newmarket.

867 Private Ernest JACKSON, 9th Battalion AIF. Died of wounds at sea (gunshot wound right thigh and scrotum) aboard Gascon, 02/05/1915.

If Ernest was on the Gascon, he didn’t die on the 2/5/1915 – Gascon’s 2nd trip to Anzac arrived back on the 2/5/1915, but didn’t begin taking on wounded until 3.30am on the 3/5/1915.  So he may have died soon after boarding in the early hours of the 3rd.

But…

Some original records show he was believed to have died between the 28th Apr & 2nd May.

The original Field Service form (p.16, 16/6/15) shows date of death ‘Not Known’ & no mention of place

Extracts from letters from his father to Base Records:

Letter dated 9/10/1915 (p.26):

“….was reported from Alexandria as having Died of wounds between 28th April & 2nd May.  I have since heard by letter from his Brother [Henry, 358 also in the 9th Bn] that the sergeant major of his platoon saw him taken on a boat on 28th April.  …….”

Letter dated 28/3/1919 (p.39):

[Following talks with ‘returned’ brother Henry (358, 9th Bn) in 1919]

“….the only thing for certain that he can tell me is that his Brother Ern was taken on board a Barge on the 28th April 1915 late in the afternoon wounded, from that on all we are told is that he died on the 2nd May 4 days after.  The lad when in Egypt later, before going to France, went to the central enquiries office to find out what had become of his Brother Ern and all they could tell him, was that He was dead.  He then asked them for the record of his burial place, they then told him after searching the records that they had no record of No 867 Pt E. Jacksons burial place.  ……”

The Gascon (first trip) left the Anzac area on the 26th 25th Apr & arrived Alex on the 28th Apr (so he couldn’t have been taken onto the Gascon if this is correct)

An amended Field Service form (p.3) shows date 2/5/15 on Gascon (filled out in Apr 1916)

68 Sergeant Douglas Elliott SCOTT, 3rd Light Horse Regiment AIF. Died of wounds at sea aboard Gascon, 20/05/1915.

Records show he was buried at sea 3 miles off Gaba Tepe by Chaplain HMS Prince of Wales – but this could easily be wrong.

However, on the 20/5/1915 the Gascon was in Alexandria Harbour, and had arrived the evening before (19th) – so if he died on that date on that ship, he would have been taken ashore and buried on land (which he wasn’t).

207 Sapper James WEST, 2 Fld Coy Engineers AIF. Died of wounds at sea aboard Gascon, 28/05/1915. [AKA LOVELL]

From Mike’s list: 207 Lovell, Ernest [aka James WEST]

Ernest Lovell enlisted as James West

Bryn’s 2nd list

149 Private Thomas BATT, 11th Battalion AIF. Died of wounds aboard Gascon, 29/04/1915.

My query on both above soldier and Charles Thurgar:

BATT, Thomas, Pte 149 11th Bn – DOW 25-29/4/1915 (the 29th was settled on which can’t be correct if on Gascon as listed on Lone Pine Memorial, so no grave, therefore buried at sea – was he on another ship, or died earlier?)

[Gascon was in Alexandria Harbour on the 29th, and had arrived the night before]

THURGAR, Charles, Pte 236 11th Bn – DOW 25-29/4/1915 (settled on 29th – Buried Chatby Mil Cem 29/4/1915)[Page 40 shows both Gascon (dated 1/5/15) & later Seang Choon – Fld Serv form (p.7, 17/6/15) Died 29/4/1915 Seang Choo]

[Gascon was in Alexandria Harbour 29th, disembarked patients all day and left at 6pm that evening

Seang Choon left Anzac on the 27/4/15 for Alexandria, and was definitely there by the 30th, (?29th)]

Gascon Diary states:

25th April “…left for Mudros Bay with 547 wounded…”

29th April “Disembarked 535 patients”

This would indicate there had been 12 deaths – 11 definitely known + either Thurgar or Batt?

Thanks Frev, Mike, Steve, Jeff, Alan and seaJane (hope I didn't miss anyone - all appreciated).

I've incorporated the discrepancies into my database. I had noted that a couple of them were 'double entries' but didn't have the detailed ships' movements that Frev has obviously worked out, so thanks very much for that.

Regarding 68 Sgt SCOTT 3LHR, I have a note in my database that there is an account of his death on page 74 of the following, but I do not have the book with me and won't be able to access it for some time, so if anybody else could check...

McKernan, M.  Padre: Australian Chaplains in Gallipoli and France, Sydney, Allen & Unwin, 1986.

I wanted to check with you too - have you done any work on identifying the chaplains? I keep seeing Lieut. Colonel Edward Victor Hugo described as a 'chaplain' when he was in fact a surgeon with the IMS (Indian Medical Service) and SMO of HMHS Gascon. He kept a diary as well, which is now held in the London Metropolitan Archives.

Reverend Alfred Lee-Warner, I suspect, was a civilian at the time he was chaplain on Gascon, as his medal card indicates that the first theatre of war he served in was France (1 November 1916), and that he was consequently ineligible for the 1914-15 Star. Any thoughts?

One other thing - according to Butler (p166 of the Medical History), the Gascon left Anzac 'about 9 p.m.' on the 25th, but Mike you note the 26th. Is there evidence that it didn't get away until the 26th?

Bryn

Woops! Bryn - I'm guessing you're referring to my typo in Post #28: The Gascon (first trip) left the Anzac area on the 26th 25th Apr & arrived Alex on the 28th Apr - which as you can see, I've now fixed.

In regard to Lt Col Hugo (Gascon) - I have the following from my file:

Have been absent for a few days, but I'll try and catch up with this thread again over the weekend, after I check all your lists against mine.

In the meantime, the Aust Army History Unit grants scheme lists the following grant in this years round:

"Diana Sillato The Anzacs in Malta: A History of the Medical, Social and Cultural implications of Malta’s role as a base hospital during the Gallipoli campaign"

May yield some interesting research once Diana publishes.

Regards

Mike

Hello everyone - Fascinating thread, wonderful research - well done all.

Just wondering whether any of you have similar lists for other hospital ships in the area at the time e.g. the Derflinger.  I ask because I'm pretty sure that one of my men of interest, Jack Trevan, 666 14th Battalion AIF, DOW on the 29th April 1915.  He had been taken on board the Derflinger on the 28th.

Thank you in advance

Jonathan

The Derfflinger was renamed Huntsgreen at some stage during 1915 – there was a discussion years ago as to when, but I don’t remember if an official date was ever found.

I have the following to add to Bryn’s list:

SURGEY, Thomas Edwin – Pte 722, 8th Bn (C Coy) – DOW 29/4/1915 (GSW back & abdomen received 25/4/1915) (Buried at sea between Gallipoli & Alexandria by Chap A.E. Talbot from HS Huntsgreen)

Commemorated on his father’s grave in the Mildura Cemetery

Tribute from a friend: http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/70371757

His father’s suicide Nov 1915: http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/74798518

WILLIS, Arthur Joseph – Pte 77, 3rd Bn – DOW 29/4/1915 (GSW Abdomen & Liver – buried at sea between Gallipoli & Alex by Rev A.E. Talbot, originally shown as Derfflinger, and changed to Huntsgreen in Oct 1915)

WHARTON, Harry Hopetoun – Pte 357, 2nd Bn – DOW 30/4/1915 (Abdomen 25/4/1915 – buried at sea off Gaba Tepe by Rev A.E. Talbot ex Derfflinger crossed out and replaced with ex Huntsgreen)

GRIMES, John – L/Cpl 1012, 11th Bn (B Coy) – DOW 3/5/1915 (buried at sea off Huntsgreen by A.E. Talbot) [?? Derfflinger/Huntsgreen was at Alexandria by the 2/5/15 when F.W. Jones (945) was buried – did Grimes die earlier? – DOW was originally shown as 28/4/15]

McDERMOTT, Stephen – Pte 85, 14th Bn – DOW 3/5/1915 at sea on Derflinger [in port?] (Head wound – buried Chatby Cem by Rev AVC Hordern)

WADDELL, James Robert – Pte 94, 18th Bn – DOW 1/9/1915 (GSW Abdomen / Back) 28/8/1915 – buried at sea on voyage to England off HS Huntsgreen by Chief Officer Hodgetts)

thank you Bryn and, as always, Frev.  I only asked because the dates from the earlier ships were from early May and not the end of April.  I appreciate the effort everyone is and has been putting in with the compiling of records.

All the best

Reverend Alfred Lee-Warner, I suspect, was a civilian at the time he was chaplain on Gascon, as his medal card indicates that the first theatre of war he served in was France (1 November 1916), and that he was consequently ineligible for the 1914-15 Star. Any thoughts?

Bryn - just scanning through my 70 pages of Gascon notes (looking for something else) and came across the following from the reminiscences of one of the the nurses (which I'd totally forgotten about):

"We had a padre on board, Lee-Warner, a delicate man, on leave from Khartoum.  He was spending his furlough on the “Gascon,” and was, I think, the finest character I ever met.

He did all the writing home for the severe cases, sat with the dying, and helped with the bandaging.  In fact, he did everything but cook."

Thanks for that information, Frev. I wonder what occupation (I'm guessing 'Clergyman', but you never know...) in Khartoum he was on furlough from?

Mates,

Checked the British MI Cards but found no officer or soldier by that name. There were four officers named Lee-Warner including one in the Indian Army but none named Alfred?

Sorry

I’ll stop looking for now, and get side-tracked back to my attempt to put together the history of the HMHS Gascon in 1915 (which I’ll share on my blog if I ever finish it...

Finished! (I think...)
