Thanks Mike, Frev and Jeff. Great stuff and much appreciated. I'll update my records to include those I didn't have identified. I'll be 'on the road' for a few days starting Monday, so won't get around to doing another proper check until next weekend, but will see if I can find any more turn then.

Regards,

Bryn

Thanks Alan, all helps to fill in the gaps.

I've crossed checked with my small list for Assaye, and can add the following, albeit much later deaths (which may not be of interest, given they post-date Anzac evacuations):

3673 Wigelsworth, Roy Parkin - DOD 12/10/1918

1618 Woods, Arthur - DOD 8/10/1918

Bryn and Mike - thanks for sharing once again...

I've just been going cross-eyed scanning backwards and forwards through your lists and mine in regard to the Gascon.  Unfortunately, and most annoyingly (with all the endless databases I've created over the years) I've never got around to putting the Gascon casualties into an actual database, but instead have them in my huge 'word file' in chronological order, in amongst other details!

So, forgive me if I've doubled up, but I couldn't find the following soldiers on your GASCON lists:

BALDWIN, Charles Robert, Pte 1522, 4th Bn – DOW 31/5/1915 (Buried at sea 3 miles off Gaba Tepe by Chaplain Lee Warner)

BATES, Wilfred Froud, LCpl 51, 16th Bn – DOW 12/5/1915 (GSW Scalp – Buried at sea off Gaba Tepe, Officiating Chaplain E. Hugo, Lt Col, I.M.S)

BAX, Alec Hartly, Tpr 524, 3rd LH – DOW 30/5/1915 (wounded 28/5) (Died and buried at sea at 11am, 3 miles off Gaba Tepe by Rev Lee Warner)

BENNETTS – Pte Edward James Bennetts, 1559, 10th Bn – DOW 15/5/15 (6.20pm) (Various wounds Buried at sea near Gaba Tepe 15/5 by Lt Col E. Hugo IMS)

BENSON – Henry Benson, Pte 167, 6th Bn – DOW 14/7/1915 (5.50am) (GSW thigh Buried at sea)

BERKIS – Arvid Berkis, Pte 1507, 6th Bn – DOW 15/7/15 (GSW body – Buried at sea between Gallipoli & Alexandria by Chap W.C. Mayne 15/7)

BUTLER, Edwin MacMullen Everitt (Ted), Cpl 701, 3rd LH – DOW 16/5/1915 (GSW Leg – Buried at sea 3 miles off Gallipoli by Chaplain of HMS Prince of Wales)

COWELL, Harry Stephen – Pte 1403, 16th Bn (D Coy) – DOW 3/5/1915 (Chest wounds) (Buried at sea)

ELLIOTT, John William, Pte 1130, 7th Bn – DOW 2/6/1915 (1.40am) (GSW Skull – Buried 3 miles off Gaba Tepe by Rev Lee Warner)

LOGAN, James John, Sgt 1783, 8th AASC – DOW 7/7/1915 at 7.30 pm (GSW Abdomen – Buried at sea 3 miles off Gaba Tepe by Rev C. Mayne)

MORGAN, Henry Eustace, Pte 2007, 6th Bn – DOW 28/6/1915 (5.40am) (GSW Thigh – Buried at sea by Rev Lee Warner)

Cheers, Frev

Bryn – Just remembered to mention you have:

1594 Private Henry WILLIAMSON, 3rd Battalion AIF. Died of wounds at sea aboard Gascon, 23/07/1915

But you’ll see in post #5 I have him on my Sicilia list:

*WILLIAMSON, Henry – Pte 1594, 3rd Bn – DOW 23/7/1915 (GSW chest), buried at sea by Rev E. Teale  [Note: some pages show Gascon, which was at Cape Helles at this time]

It’s really annoying when a soldier’s service record shows he died on 2 different ships, and I have a few I’m still having trouble with.

However, I’m pretty convinced that Williamson couldn’t have died on the Gascon (unless for some strange reason he was at Cape Helles at the time), because Gascon left the Anzac area on the 14/7/1915, and didn’t return until 8/8/1915.

It arrived at Cape Helles from Lemnos on the 22/7/1915 and began taking on wounded on the 23/7/1915 until early on the 30/7/1915.

He was wounded on the  23/7/1915 and DOW 23/7/1915.  Even though page 5, 12, 24, 39 etc… show died on the Gascon, Page 10 of his file shows ‘Buried at sea Sicilia 23/7/1915 by Rev E. Teale’ (who was the Chaplain on the Sicilia).  And although the Sicilia War Diary doesn’t contain 1915 (Grumble!) according to the 1st ACCS War Diary, the Sicilia returned to Anzac at midnight on the 22/7/1915.

Cheers, Frev

Hi Bryn and Frev,

Good point, Frev.

I've looked at the file (NAA barcode 8388957) and also the 3Bn War Diary. The latter places the unit on the ANZAC perimeter during the period leading up to, and post 23 July 1915. On 23 July, the diary shows one OR as KIA, and one WIA. Williamson's file notes, on page 10, that he was wounded on 23/7/1915 (far right side of page). So I think there is little doubt he was wounded and transferred to a ship offshore from Anzac Cove, not Cape Helles, on 23 July 1915, which rules out Gascon, which was at Cape Helles.

A similar problem arises with 576 Taylor, James (NAA barcode 1931077), also 3 Bn, WIA on 16/7/1915, but DOW 23/7/1915. (The War Diary reports 3 WIA on 15 July, but no WIA on 16 or 17 July.) The field service form states Taylor died aboard Gascon, but page 21 states (1) Gascon, reported from Malta by cable 741, the same cable as Williamson's reported death aboard Gascon, and then below that, buried at sea from Sicilia by Rev E Teale between Gallipoli and Malta. If aboard Sicilia, does this mean he spent from 16/7/1915 until the return of Sicilia to Anzac at midnight 22/7/1915, onshore at Anzac? Seems a long time in hospital ashore before transfer.

Also, do we know when Sicilia left Anzac for Malta, as there are a number of deaths aboard on 23/7/1915, with burial 'at sea between Gallipoli and Malta' on 23/7/1915 by the Rev Teale. For example, 719 Hilton, 7ALH (NAA 5455232), who was WIA on 22/7/1915 and 'transferred to hospital ship same day' (p.5) and on p.14 is noted as buried at sea by Rev Teale from Sicilia 'between Gallipoli and Malta'.

Another point is the situation of 1719 Burke, Charles, 15 Inf Bn, (NAA3168808) who died of Enteric aboard Gascon on 2 August 1915. His file states he was admitted Gascon on 30/7/1915, and buried at sea near Alexandria on 2 August. The war diary of 15 Bn is not very good at locations, but the unit appears to have been in reserve at Anzac on 30/7/1915 (Walkers Gully), so Burke had to have been transferred to the hospital ship off Anzac, not Cape Helles, on 30/7/1915. This is at odds with Gascon's location at that time according to Frev's work. Or did Gascon make a voyage from Helles to Anzac to Alex, then back to Anzac, between 14 July and 8 August that we are not otherwise aware of?

All very intriguing.

Mike

Welcome to the discussion, Steve, and for the additional personnel.

The later (post 1915) deaths may not be of direct interest to Frev and Bryn, but certainly are to me, so thanks for including them.

One you may wish to consider: 96 Dalton's file (NAA3484026) shows him as Clive Malcolm, rather than Charles Malcolm.

Regards

Mike

Mike,

Yes your right, thats why I also included an AKA, as he is shown of different documents as either Charles or Clive.

One of the many where clerks got the names mixed up in different sources.

So I place both and leave it to others, as when chasing sources it can be trouble.

Sorry on double checking it appears I also placed Medical staff on these ships on the lists when they didn't die?

Cheers

Good pickups Mike

I hadn’t come across TAYLOR (576) – but I’d say he was also on the Sicilia, and could have been sent aboard anywhere between his wounding on the 16th and his death on the 23rd.

War Diary, 1st ACCS, Anzac:

14/7/15:

Major SJ Richards invalided to Hospital ship Sicilia …..

Evacuated 247 cases

16/7/15:

Visited H.S. Sicilia to see Major Richards

Evacuated 190 cases

17/7/15:

Evacuated 199 cases

21/7/15:

Received news from H.S. Sicilia that Major Richards died at 3.30 a.m. & was buried at sea.

22/7/15:

4.45 pm. The hospital ship ‘Sicilia’ was ordered to Imbros to pick up a sick General Officer and return.  She returned at midnight.  During that period we were left with no hospital ship to evacuate wounded to.

[Continues to evacuate wounded to hospital ship, but no further mention of the Sicilia by name (or when it left Anzac)]

6/8/15:

The Hosp Ship Sicilia which came in today was rapidly filled to overflowing and reported that she would take no more cases – no other hospital ship in at present in sight.

Same goes for BURKE (1719)

I can answer the following question with a definite no, as I have a copy of the Gascon War Diary (which unlike my copy of the Sicilia WD, does contain 1915!):

Or did Gascon make a voyage from Helles to Anzac to Alex, then back to Anzac, between 14 July and 8 August that we are not otherwise aware of?

Thanks also to Steve and Alan for your additions - at this rate we'll build some pretty informative lists!

Cheers, Frev

Steve, sorry: missed the AKA at the end of that entry - picked up the others, but missed that one.

Thanks, Frev, for the clarifications.

In the light of the info in your posts, which, in summary, shows:

Gascon is not at Anzac from 14/7/1915 to 8/8/1915, and is at Cape Helles from 22/7/1915 to 30/7/1915

Sicilia is at Anzac from (at least) 14/7/1915 to 16:45 on 22/7/1915, and is absent only from that time till 24:00 same day, when it is back at Anzac for an unspecified time after that.

On 23/7/1915, 192 Hosking is taken aboard, and dies between Gallipoli and Malta on 26/7/1915.  By 28/7/1915, the ship was at Malta, where 95 Campbell died in harbour and was transferred ashore for burial.

I then re-ordered the database with our current list of personnel for just Sicilia and Gascon (288 entries), and thus far it throws up four attributed to Gascon during the period that we know the ship was not at Anzac, but Sicilia was:

1594 Williamson

576 Taylor

1719 Burke

1936 Davies (NAA 1899735) - another 3 Inf Bn casualty, died 20/7/1915

The first three we have already looked at and there is no possibility they died aboard Gascon, but almost - 99.99% - certainty aboard Sicilia.

Davies is in the same boat (no pun intended). His file consistently states Gascon on forms (pp 7, 14, 19, 21, 49) and in correspondence, all of which entries appear to be based upon the cable notification from Malta - WB741, the same cable seen in the others listed above. The same ship is referred to in various correspondence, all of which is based upon the forms mentioned. Nowhere in the file is Sicilia mentioned, yet we know from your copy of the ship's log that he cannot have been transferred offshore from Anzac to Gascon - it was not there, so Sicilia again seems to be the only possibility. (I've now 'double dipped' those four database entries as Sicilia (Gascon) and referenced this thread in the notes field.)

In the absence of a ship's log for Sicilia, it is possible to gain some idea of its movements and locations. For example, 15 Bird is shown as embarked on 8 August from Anzac, and died on 9 August between Gallipoli and Alex. On 12 August, we know that Sicilia arrived in Alex, as 96 Dalton and 347 Mudge both died aboard in harbour, and were taken ashore for burial.

Regards

Mike

I don't know how much use these will be, but I have picked up some movements of SICILIA, GASCON and NEURALIA in June/July from the diary of a Medical Officer aboard REWA.

Saturday, June 26th. Neuralia and Sicilia reported to be lying close by REWA [at Cape Helles?]. “The "Sicilian" is first on turn for Dardanelles, we are second. I hear that she goes out tonight, and it looks like it as her lights are blazing and the general order is "lights out". An aeroplane occasionally comes this far for a little bomb dropping.

Sunday, June 27th. The "Gascon" H.M.H.S. painted also fired on, no casualties.

Monday, June 28th. We leave Mudros Harbour 6 a.m. [...] We expect to make Helles about 10.30 a.m. "Neuralia" is just ahead of us.

Sunday, July 11th. Heard first gun fire in my cabin about 7.45, things evidently not so busy as last time. We anchored just after breakfast not quite in same place as before, but a little further north, with Cape Tekeh on our beam, having an excellent view of Achi Baba and ground in front of it. [...] in the far distance off Gaba Tepe can be seen another British Hospital Ship, I think the “Gascon”.

The movements of hospital ships to and from Mudros are recorded in the Embarkation Officer's War Diary, which I've listed below. The document is typed so hopefully there will not be too many of my usual spelling errors. In my particular interest of artillerymen I haven't found the diary 100% accurate, but it may help to fill-in one or two gaps. It does have a number of ships that are not listed on the Helles Memorial, a photograph of which I recently posted elsewhere in this forum.

I hope it is of interest.

Alan
