Remembering the ninth of 47 Squadron's South Russia Casualties.

100 Year ago, 21st Jan, 1920.

Remembering 224622, AC1, Walter John Carro, R.A.F.

Aged 27 years.

Walter John Carro, entered the RAF, 1st Apr., 1918, having previously served for 16 months with the RNAS (HMS Furious).  RAF Term of Service was extended for 3 years (3rd Mar, 1919) at which time he volunteered for war service (South Russia) with 47 Squadron.  RAF trade was that of a carpenter, which mirrored Mr Carro's earlier civilian occupation and the RAF service record confirms he was at the "Grand Flight School - Aerial Gunnery & Fighting" for one month commencing 25th Apr, 1919, before again moving (25th May) to RAF Depot (likely Halton Camp).  Movement from Depot to 47 Squadron was confirmed 15th Jun, 1919.

Squadron records further confirm AC1 Carro disembarked the Black Sea port of Novorossiysk, South Russia, on the 9th July, reporting for duty, at Ekaterinodar, on the 11th.  Thereafter, very little is known of his movements in South Russia but the service record does provide us with the casualty details - "Died 21st Jan, 1920 from Typhus in South Russia."  The third of the Squadron's four victims to succumb from this disease.  A  glance at the RAF Casualty Card provides further evidence to confirm date and cause of death and name and address of next of kin - "Mrs Constance Ellen Carro, Wife."

Remembered With Honour at the Lake Doiran Memorial, Greece.

Walter John Carro, born 29th Oct., 1892, Wellington, Somerset.

Husband of Constance Ellen Carro, 29 Russel[l] Street, Newtown, Exeter.

(Formerly of 15, Cummins Buildings, South Wonford, Heavitree, Exeter).

Recipient of the British War Medal & Victory Medal -

According to the RAF Record of Service, 2 sets of medals were authorised!  These were dispatched to Mrs Carro, on the 25th Sept, 1922 and 22nd Oct, 1922!
