41st Field Amb.  Royal Army Medical Corps

Son of Adam and Amelia Hill, of 779, Albion Terrace, Shawforth, Lancashire.

 

Western front pension document

The claimant of a dependents pension is listed as

Amelia Hill (mother) of 779 Market Street Shawforth W/Rochdale

Cause of death wounds 4/8/18

 

However

Whist looking at the service document of a local man Driver 33859 Charles Whitfield 69th Bty R.F.A

The cause of death of Private G.H.Hill is revealed

Below is a transcription of a Field General Court Martial    (Harir 4/8/18)

 

(1) when on active service without orders from his superior officer leaving his guard in that he at Harir on August the 4th at 3.30 am on being relieved as sentry proceeded to guard tent and thence to his own tent without orders from his superior officer

(2) When on active service neglect to the prejudice of good order &military discipline in that at Harir on the Aug 4th did negligently discharge his rifle thereby causing the death of his comrade 105555 Pte Hill RAMC

Whitfield was found guilty and sentenced to 42 days field punishment No 1

As an aside Driver Charles Whitfield 33859 died of bronco pneumonia on the 25th October 1918 at Deolali near Bombay India just short of three months later
