Remembered Today:

Petrol bullets

An Aberfeldy soldier of "A" Company, 1/6th Black Watch, writing home on the 8th July, 1915, says

"If we could only get the Germans clear of the trenches we would soon finish them. They are a cowardly lot and up to all the dirtiest dodges imaginable. They even shoot our poor wounded who happen to be lying between the two firing lines. They are now using petrol bullets, which burn you as well as giving you a nasty wound."

Never heard of 'petrol bullets' and imagine this just a rumour at the time. What missile might he be describing?
