williywonker Posted 4 January , 2020 Share Posted 4 January , 2020 (edited) Can anyone confirm the date and manner (Royal Warrant?) in which the Army Nursing Service was formed please? Ian Hay states 1883 yet I seem to recollect another source which gives 1881. Mal Edited 4 January , 2020 by williywonker
Moonraker Posted 4 January , 2020 Share Posted 4 January , 2020 Most sources agree that it was established in 1881, with a Royal Warrant establishing Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service in 1902. Scarletfinders is a little vague. Scope for debating whether the intention to set up the ANS was announced in 1881, with it only coming into being for practical purposes in 1882 - or 1883. Note Scarletfinders' reference to "the promulgation of new regulations for the service in 1883". Scope to debate what "promulgation" means. One definition is "the formal proclamation or declaration that a new statutory or administrative law is enacted after its final approval. In some jurisdictions, this additional step is necessary before the law can take effect." Moonraker
