If anyone has a copy of 'Soldiers Died in the Great War' I would like to ask for your help. Can you look up and let me know where Private Hopkins was born and where he enlisted at. Your help would be most appreciated

Thanks for looking Chris and for your reply. I was aware of the circumstances surrounding his death but was hoping despite that that he would have merited an entry in SDGW .I've always believed/been told that the printed versions detailed all casualties as the circumstances of the death weren't specified but places of birth and enlistment were. His name is not included on the town war memorial and I can understand his widow's reluctance in that connection.

Why was your reply edited by clk and who is he/she?

Best.

The "Forces War Records" website has four entries (plus a duplicate) for T Hopkins in the Lancashire Fusiliers; two don't have service numbers, both Privates, one dated 1900, the other dated 1916.

Unfortunately there's a cost to finding out more details, and I'm not a subscriber.

Good luck with your search.

I take it you have seen this. I searched under SAD and found this entry for Gorre Cemetery. His wife lived in Birkenhead. I checked the WDs of the Unit, 125 Infantry Brigade and 42 Div HQ General Staff and A&QMG from September 1917 to February 1918. I found nothing in any about his sentence being promulgated or carried out.

Not about where born & enlisted, but may be of interest ...

Thanks to the Western Front Association / Ancestry (Fold3) there is a Pension Ledger record:

His widow is recorded as Mary Ann c/o Mrs Moore, 6 Vine St, Birkenhead

The ledger is marked in Remarks: "Refusal. Entitlement to full pension admitted, but refused as there was no pre war maintenance 15.4.18"

And

If refused, reason: "Separated Wife"
