He joined the Royal Navy 1893 and was dishonorable discharge with 18 months hard labour around 1901, for striking a senior officer. The first letter is dated 16/1/1915 whilst he was serving with 41st Company Royal Garrison Artillery. All the letters are to Mrs Van Der Heyle his pen pal. 46872 Gunner JA Hayward 41St Coy RGA.. The letters cover a small time in the World War but are a very interesting read.
