CAN ANYONE HELP? I HAVE COME ACROSS A PAYBOOK FOR A SGT IN THE R.I.F WHO WAS ABLE TO DRW SEVERAL HUNDRED POUNDS IN PAY PRIOR TO GOING ON LEAVE.

BUT I HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO FIND OUT THE FOLLOWING:

1 HOW OFTEN WERE THE TROOPS PAIS

2 DID THEY GET PAID AT THE FRONT OR HAVE TO COME TO THE REAR

3 WHO PAID THEM PAY CORPS OR COMPANY CLERK

Hello Harvey, and welcome to the Forum!

In peacetime, soldiers were usually paid weekly, on a Saturday. In the field they were paid as necessary, normally on being withdrawn from the trenches.

They were paid by an officer of their company, squadron or battery, usually with the assistance of an NCO who kept the paperwork up to date. Officers obtained their funds on imprest from the divisional Field Cashier, an officer of the Army Pay Corps who was assisted by an APC clerk.

They would normally be paid in local currency (for which, in those days, there were fixed exchange rates). I would echo Coldstreamer's comment - probably francs rather than pounds. The rate was about 25 to the £
